Conference Program

This invitation-only conference is presented in partnership with the Children’s Commission. Judges from across Texas who hear CPS cases as a significant part of their docket have been invited to attend and to bring a court team comprised of five professionals who serve in the following roles:  court coordinator; prosecutor; parent’s attorney (ideally, this attorney would also take AAL appointments in CPS cases); Senior-level Caseworker or Supervisor at DFPS; and a CASA Executive Director or Program Director.  The goal of the Institute is for these court teams to learn best practices for creating a CPS court that is trauma informed and trauma responsive.  Including several presentations on trauma and related tools to support judges and their teams, the curriculum will examine the various stages of a CPS case from pre-removal through the end of the case.  The Institute will provide judges and their court teams the opportunity to create a jurisdictionally-appropriate action plan to implement on their return, as well as practical ideas for dealing with secondary trauma, how to sustain their efforts, and how to build coalition and community to support children and families experiencing the child welfare system.

Participants will earn 12.50 CJE and FV hours.
